Barbados’ 1st Women’s Chess Champion, Margaret Prince was an icon of the local chess community and one of its most vocal advocates for Women’s Chess. She was a former Vice-President and Founding Member of the Barbados Chess Federation, serving a number of times on its Executive Management Committee. She was also a Founding Member of the Barbados Ladies Chess Association, serving as its Treasurer, and the Barbados Organization for Women in Sport.

An avid sports enthusiast she played Draughts and Dominoes competitively and was “Go As You Please” Barbados Women’s Draughts Champion. Tournament Director, Chess Coach, Chaperone to many female junior players, Manager of the Barbados Under 12 Junior Squad and Assistant Junior Team Manager on numerous tours to Trinidad & Tobago, Margaret Prince played an invaluable role to the development of the Sport of Chess in Barbados. To honour her contribution is why the tournament is being held.

Category: Open to all female players with an ELO rating of less than 2200, that is ELO < 2200. Type: 7 round Swiss
Time Control: 1 ½ hour with 30 seconds increment.
Dates: January 1 – 4, 2010. Two rounds on 1 – 3 and one on 4th.
Daily start times: first round 10.00 a.m., next round 4.00 p.m. Closing ceremony 3.00 p.m. on January 4th.

Playing site: Bridgetown Chess Center, Cavans Lane, Bridgetown, Barbados.

Best Barbadian Player – US$150

Cash prizes will be shared equally, for those on equal points. Tiebreaks used to determine rankings in order are Progressive, Bucholz and Sonnenberger.

Accommodation: Palm Garden Hotel, Worthing Christ Church US$ 42 per night per person with 3 persons in a room.

Entry Fee: WGM US$ 25, WIM/ WFM/ WCM US$ 40, All others US$50

    This is a great initiative on the part of the Barbados Chess Federation and we in Jamaica wish for our Barbadian colleagues great success in this event.

    Indeed, Jamaica will have two participants, WFM Deborah Richards, the strongest female player in the English-speaking Caribbean, and rising Jamaican female star Melisha Smith. This is the least we could do in tribute to Margaret Prince, a great Caribbean stalwart. May her memory live long in the annals of West Indian sports, particularly chess!!
