Baltimore-Philly IV… Battle of the Beasts!

There has been a lot of buzz going on about the match tomorrow (September 20th) between Baltimore and Philadelphia. Both sides have been trash-talking and Philly is looking to avenge their 14-12 loss. This battle has become a fierce rivalry and it’s time to settle the score for once and for all. Will Baltimore blast Philly into next week or will Philly pulverize Baltimore into submission? Whatever will happen, some inspired chess will be played and the event will be made known to the world!

FM William “The Exterminator” Morrison has told The Chess Drum that his team will come prepared to do battle. NM Glenn Bady has lead the charge for Philly stating that they bring “wiggle-resistant” fishing nets with them. Sounds like fighting words, but of course the event has raised the spirit of chess activity and it will be one of social significance and bringing both communities closer together.

Let’s get it on!

  1. Philly suffers another beatdown !!!!
    Baltimore 15½ Philly 5½
First Round Baltimore 9 Philly 1

We kind of felt sorry for the Philly Group and put the 3rd string in for the 2nd round. That’s why they won a few games.

The traveling aquarium fed on the Philly guppies. Their was quite a few killer sharks in the Baltimore aquarium.

Bruce Thompson said that Baltimore are a school of fish. They were lucky, he told me that he crushed Antoine and destroy Richard, what a joke. Next time the Baltimore aquarium travel to match wits with Philly it we will have a large hook for them.

    Philly filet fish.

Thanks to Charles for being a great host. P.S. Philly lost the speed match too.

  2. Now Glenn, you know you owe the Chess Drum an Article, and make sure that you mention in the article how I beat both you and James Gist in speed chess matches, after I beat Bruce in round one (that’s right the same Bruce that beat me last time) and James Gist in round two of the actual tornament. Also. you might want to mention in that article how I beat Dragon 3 – 0 in the blitz tournament, and don’t leave out how I tried to play you in round two of the tournament but you did not want to play me, and don’t leave out how you went 1 win and 4 losses out of your 5 games between the slow chess and blitz chess tournaments. Lastly do not forget to mention how nice the host was for having us over and how nice the playing site was, and how AWESOME!!! team Baltimore is. You better get started you have a lot of writting to do.

  3. Daaim,
We are trying to organize an article which I am writing! I await
lineup info from William Morrison, and Michael Williams will send
pictures to me for placement. All blogs to date are accurate but our
report is taking a little longer than expected. Glenn and Antoine had
a personal bet regarding an article but Michael Williams and I had
    committed to this in advance.

  6. Could you imagine the eery ride back to Philly and Delaware? I picture total silence as the chess wannabees are slapping each other and shouting Wake Up!!! Wake UP!!!!!! Moe, Curly and Joe!!! Which way did we get mated. I see Glen Bady and crew, clicking their heals and saying theres no place like home!! Theres no place like home!! They wake up in Kansas and find the Baltimore cleanup crew ready to put them out of their Chess misery. Doo Doo doop doodle do, if they only have a game.

Once upon a midnight dreary there came a lot of rapping and mindless yapping from some pitiful Philly chess players
Over many a blunder and curious volume of forgotten chess moves –
While Baltimore nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came Philly talking crap while getting slapped, while Baltimore gently smacking and going 9-1 The Chess Gods’ tapping,
As of Philly rapping, rapping at Baltimore’s door.
«Tis some visitor», who saw this massacre, Baltimore muttered, «tapping at Baltimore’s door:
Wasn’t it silly to come from Philly
    Only this and nothing more».

It is always a pleasure to be part of something as wonderful as this. What could be better than this? The first round was a bit of a surprise to everyone(9-1), though I did feel we had a certain advantage. I was fortunate enough to get into a favorable position
in my first round game but this was not the case in round two.Glenn really deserved more out of the second game, which was a Ruy Lopez, but simply overpressed. He had some advantage in space and a d6 target. I would have taken a draw if he had asked. Tough defense prevailed in the end. I must congradulate all of my team members. All of these guys have lots of potential and I believe that the master titles are not far away. This match should be a shining example of Baltimore’s talent. I would like for us now to turn our sights to the North and challenge the “Big Apple”. I have already contacted Jerald Times and await his return call. Our confidence is at an all time high. If NY accepts the challenge, it would be simply foolish of them not to take heed and field their strongest team. (Board One: Maurice Ashley) I would walk to N.Y. at a brisk pace if I could be assured that Ashley would play!!

  8. For the record, I finished the main text of the article some days ago, William M. gave me the scores on Monday or so but I wanted to include games from others. I have made requests of two individuals but have received no games, so the article will be submitted by midnight tonight. I wanted to be inclusive of all, even those without the internet. I do not like the impression of having to compete with a blog to showcase a great story as this match is but I don’t really expect to have extended discussion about this. I just want the article posted preferably with games that inspire future matches and future development of all players involved! Also, I think we must train to expect to sustain our team’s winning ways despite our strength, and talent!

  9. Hi Daaim,

Yes, Baltimore did crush us, and Antoine did beat me in our speed match. They have a strong team and deserve victory. Maybe we can practice and compete with them in the future. Daaim a fast way to put games in chessbase format is to use the Ctrl C for copy and then use Ctrl V for paste. This is how it works: any game you receive just highlight it and copy it (Ctrl C) open up a new game in chessbase and use Ctrl V (to paste) the game in the new game board that you opened up. I learned how to do from reading chessbase workshops. I already tried this and it works. Peace to all the brothers who played in the match.

  10. A short poem from Baltimore
Starlight starbright, where is our next fight? We want to flex our new found might. We look to the East, we look to the West, perhaps it’s the North that will be our next test. N.Y., N.Y., can’t you see; it’s the ferocious team from the Big “B”.
We challenge you, if it’s alright, because we are looking for a good fight. We played Philly and they fell down, that’s why we want to come to your town.

  11. I want Colding when we Play New York. We need to do it soon before it gets too cold.
By the way, thanks to the Philly Brothers for coming down. One day ifPhilly can gets it whole team together.
    1. Norman Rogers vs. The Exterminator
    2. Elvin Wilson vs. Adu The Nigerian Terror
    3. Glenn Bady vs. Troy “The Truth” Roberts
    4. Glenn Umstead vs. Antoine “The Hammer” Hutchinson
    5. Ray Robinson vs. Kimani “The Professor Stancil”
    6. Shelly Mays vs. Jorge “The Assasin” Martinez
    7. Herb Causwell vs. David “Pawn Master” Mcduffie
    8. Bruce Thompson vs. General Lee Carter
    9. Mike Williams vs. Dimarco “The Dream” Walker
    10. Malik Rogers vs Tavon “The Kid”

This line up would be a match!! So Glenn, Mike, Malik if you want Baltimore to come back next year you need to have a line up that looks something like that.

  12. I have sent the article, and we did keep track of names this time. A
couple of last names may be omitted by personal choice but this fact is unclear. I hope that everyone enjoys the article when it surfaces here.
    Peace,
    Kimani

  13. I understand what you saying Dr. Diaam. I guess the “trick” Ctrl C and Cntr V was new for me and not you. No disrespect. I have no control who write the article. My own opinion is that anybody can write the article concerning Baltimore and Philly match. Just choose from the one that is most correct and informative. Its very easy to have everybody name and it only takes the writer a couple of minutes. Each team should have a registration form of all the players and rating. Board order would also be included and any changes during the second game would be recorded. I still await the article.
    Peace

  14. I’m surprised you fell into that trap Larry! (L.B Pugh).
To be a little more accurate, if our top players came out, the line up would definitely be different.. Players like Anthony Randolph, and Earl Brown would fill the roster. And of course, WE would pick our team not, our opponent! 😀

  15. Hi Larry
Good to hear from you on the Chess Drum. Hey Mike I can understand what Larry saying. He is starting to play in over the board tournament (OTB) again and he is an expert. Anthony Randolph and Earl Brown are masters, but they have not played in OTB tournament in over 15 years. Although, Earl Brown would come to Mc Donalds on 52nd street last year and beat up on the street players. He would win about 98 percent of the time, he beat them so badly that they stop talking to him. Go figure. Yes, Philly need Larry Pugh and Jeff Johnson to play against The Big “B”. Mr. Antione Hutchinson is on track about the line up, but we could even seat a stronger one than he suggest.

  16. Glenn, I hear what your saying. I don’t really like to have individual discussions on this blog, but, my point is if Philly is serious about winning these type of events in the future, we need to let all our resources have the opportunity to compete. I was speaking to Randolph at the World Open last year and Earl, though rusty, may come into forn if he had a reason too.
For example, let’s say we commit to have another one in say, April. Would it not be in our best interest to let them know in case they may want to study up for a G/45?

  17. See that is all that I am saying Mike / Glenn, but Mike I have to disagree with you picking your line-up cause that has not worked out to well for you guys the last two times. This is the line-up I want to see at least at the top, otherwise there is really no point at a rematch. Larry I disagree Mike is definitely strong enough to make the team. Glenn we would love to face your best line-up. We have a few players that we can dust off as well like Wilbert Brown, William Stokes, Troy Williams, and Charles Covington. Get your squad together and maybe we can go 15 deep!! next time.

  18. I agree with Antoine Hutchinson that both teams need to field their strongest players. For this reason, Baltimore will be having an “inter-team” tournament to verify who is best suited to represent us at any future competition. Once we do this, then the world can watch out! 😈

  19. I live up in Beacon NY. How do I get a chess club started like that? Im gonna give it a run. Looks like you all had a great competition.
